Hitler’s Germany invaded Poland, claiming to be retaliating against a nonexistent Polish aggression. World War II began on September 3, 1939, with Great Britain and France declaring war on Germany, honoring their alliance with Poland. Following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Germany, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east onSeptember 17.

- May 10 to June 25, 1940, Battle of France.
The German invasion of the Low Countries and France, known as the Battle of France, happened from May 10 to June 25, 1940, during World War II. In just over six weeks, the German military forces took Paris, evicted the British Expeditionary Force from the continent, invaded Belgium and the Netherlands, and forced the French government to capitulate.

- July to September 1940, Battle of Britain.
The Battle of Britain was highlighted by the British’s successful defense against continuous Luftwaffe air attacks from July to September 1940. If Britain were overwhelmed, it would have been vulnerable to an invasion by the German army, which controlled French ports across the English Channel. The Royal Air Force (RAF) Fighter Command won the battle, preventing an invasion and ensuring Britain’s survival.

- Pearl Harbor Attack, December 7, 1941.
Japan and the Imperial Japanese Navy took a huge risk at Pearl Harbor, secretly sending all six of their armed “aircraft carriers” across 3,000 miles of open sea to a few hundred miles north of Hawaii. Early Sunday morning, December 7, 1941,Japanese jets destroyed 19 U.S. warships, 300 aircraft, and killed approximately 2,400 American service members in 90 minutes. The battleship USS Arizona after a bomb in its forward magazine ignited more than a million pounds of ammunition, killing half its crew. Pearl Harbor preserves the ship’s ashes as a memorial to that terrible morning.
